History of Terrazzo at Tedesco Tile Group
The Tedesco Tile Group was one of the first organisations to bring in situ Terrazzo to the UK.
The corner stone of Tedesco Tile Group was Julio Tedesco who came to Scotland a young man and set up a Terrazzo business; starting initially with in situ Terrazzo for floors and walls. Whilst doing his work Julio would erect a tent around him in order to keep his professional skills and craftsman-ship a secret. In those days there were no polishing machines, everything had to be done by hand and the polishing was done by using a pole with a caborundum stone attached; the polishing process took hours but, once completed showed off the Terrazzo to its best effect. Julio did all this work by himself.
The Glasgow public was then introduced to Terrazzo door steps, better known as threshold bars or draft excluders. Julio was able to incorporate many designs into his work such as diamond shapes, birds etc along with a variety of different colors, his work was individual and unique to his various customers.
Julio sold numerous doorsteps to customers who lived in the tenement blocks in and around Glasgow and throughout the UK. Customers could have any design they wished in line with whatever fashion they wanted - they could even have their name inserted; the choice was unlimited. Julio was quickly able to apply his craft to more than doorsteps and developed Terrazzo urinal partitions, work tops, slabs for fish mongers, fire places, hearths and monumental headstones. He was a master in his field doing all of the aforementioned work himself.
His son, Donny, the current owner of Tedesco Tile Group, acquired all of his knowledge from his father, Julio over these years. When Donny was a young man his father showed him the secrets of his trade and, once he was sufficiently skilled, Donny assisted his father on large projects. Julio was keen to pass on his skills to his son and teach him a trade which he felt would stand him in good stead for the rest of his life. Donny from a young age realized and appreciated the value of the skills passed on to him from his father.
Tedesco Tile Group, under Donny's leadership, has become one of the largest tiling businesses in the UK employing many staff. Donny has now been at the helm of the business for over 40 years and the values, professionalism and skills passed on to him by his father, Julio, have enabled this success.
Present Day Terrazzo at Tedesco Tile Group
